Flames unleash offensive onslaught on Bethany
OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary released a hefty dose of pent-up frustration on Wednesday afternoon.
After scoring just two total goals and going winless in their first five matches, the Flames exploded for a dozen in a 12-0 home romp over Bethany College to give first-year CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill his first career collegiate victory.
"We needed to get that win off our backs,'' Parkhill said. "It's a really nice win, especially before conference, being able to play as many as we did.''
Fifth-year senior Kylie Anderson starred with four goals – including three in the first 3:36 of the second half, turning a 4-0 halftime lead into a 7-0 bulge.
CSM improved to 1-3-2 overall, while Bethany dropped to 0-5.
Anderson, an Omaha Marian High School product, decided to use her COVID-19 year, which made Parkhill happy.
"She's kind of dealt with some injuries at the beginning, but she's starting to hit her stride,'' he said. "She's been finding herself in good spots. For her to get the goals that she did is pretty fantastic.''
Highly touted freshman Ella Klusman scored her first two collegiate goals – one on a penalty kick – and assisted on two others.
"So far here it's kind of been a grind for her,'' Parkhill said. "I immediately called her name out for the PK because I wanted her to break the seal.''
Freshman Bella Olsen added two goals. The CSM coach said she's been primarily an outside backer, but responded well in being moved up to forward.
Marissa Ring added a goal and two assists – scoring less than 30 seconds upon entering the match. Taylor Kruse pitched in a goal and an assist, while Libbie Brezenski and Abbie Anderson added goals. Amory Vasquez and Aubrey Vancura contributed two assists each, while Kaylie Senior and Lesli Donis had one apiece in the impressive victory.
Parkhill said the next goal is to execute with precision as the competition increases.
"We still have a long way to go,'' he said. "We finally took some shots, so that's a positive because that's something that I've been harping on. There's little, small details that could have made it a lot better for us. But overall, they did what I asked.''
Keepers Alivia Schade and Madalynn Rhodes combined for the clean sheet in goal, earning praise from their coach for their play.
The Flames return to action on Sept. 18 in their GPAC opener at home against Waldorf. Parkhill hopes his club will continue to make strides in the coming training sessions.
"Being quicker on the ball. Pace of play. Being sharp, no matter who you play,'' he said. "You always have to play to a standard. That's something we've been preaching.''
