White leads four CSM players in double figures

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary basketball team had four players in double figures Wednesday despite a loss to Morningside University.

The Flames were defeated 83-62 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.

"We really did a lot of good things tonight," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "We had four players in double figures and did a much better job of taking care of the ball in the second half.

"The biggest issue for us tonight is that every time they made a run, we couldn't answer that run. I thought the effort was there again, we just have to find a way to get to shooters and do a better job of contesting."

The Mustangs jumped ahead 25-14 in the opening quarter and outscored the Flames 15-10 in the second quarter to build that lead. But CSM rallied to outscore Morningside 19-15 in the third frame, before being bested 28-19 in the final frame.

The Flames shot 39 percent from the floor, 33 percent from 3-point range and 71 percent from the free-throw line. Morningside was 43 percent, 38 percent and 70 percent, respectively.

Bailey White (SR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) led CSM with 18 points. Teammate Kenzi Hoit (SR/Omaha, Neb.) canned 14 points, Allison Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) tossed in 12 and Madelyn Turner (SR/Bennington, Neb.) finished with 11. Turner had a team-high seven rebounds as Hoit and Kaylin Garza (FR/Belle Fourche, S.D.) both pulled down six. Hoit also dished out five assists.

"I felt like Madelyn really rebounded the ball well in the second half and was really aggressive on the boards," Walker said. "Al Schubert had a really good game. All the way around, we're going to continue to get better and we're going to put it all together. It's right there."

The Flames drop to 1-8 in the GPAC and 4-11 overall. They return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. with a home game vs. Mount Marty University.
