NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – The College of Saint Mary volleyball team continued its winning streak over the weekend in the CSM/United Sports Academy Labor Day Classic.
The Flames got a 3-0 win over St. Francis (Ind.) in their first match Saturday and then defeated Providence (Mt.) 3-1 in their second match. Those wins give CSM 11 straight wins and an 11-1 overall record.
"We won a tough battle tonight to finish the weekend 4-0," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "It was a great match where we had to grind against a really good team. I was proud of how the ladies fought tonight and showed a lot of heart."
Against St. Francis the Flames cruised to victory by scores of 25-9, 25-23 and 25-7.
Azaria Green led CSM with 10 kills, while teammate Lexie Langley belted eight. Setters Lauren Anderson and Miranda Ring had 11 and 10 assists, respectively. Libero Rachel Cushing paced the Flames with 21 digs, Krissy Radicia tallied nine and both Anderson and Ring added seven each. Green also come up with three block assists in the match.
"Azaria led the team with 10 kills and a .450 hitting efficiency," Pruett said. "These games are hard to play and keep focused on. We struggled in that second set, but figured it out after that."
The Flames had their hands full in the second match of the day, however.
College of Saint Mary snuck out the win in the first set by a score of 25-23 and then won the second set 25-17. But the Argonauts fought back to win the third set 27-25 to force the fourth and deciding set. CSM squeaked out the 25-23 victory to go home undefeated on the weekend.
"We let Providence back in it by several service errors in sets three and four, but we found a way to still get it done," Pruett said. "Everyone had to contribute and everyone did. Azaria came up with a huge kill and a one-on-one solo block to win the match.
"Our middles were so good this weekend and really carried the load for us. But, on the flip side, everyone got big kills and big plays to help."
College of Saint Mary opens Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Wednesday. The Flames play host to Hastings College at 7:30 p.m. The junior varsity match starts at 6 p.m.
