Flames celebrate Senior Day with win
OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary volleyball team celebrated Senior Day with a victory over Mount Marty University.
The Flames defeated Mount Marty 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-13.
"I was proud of our effort tonight," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We played with some energy and came out playing hard right away. It was a nice way to honor our seniors."
Before the match, CSM recognized seniors Maria Semerad (SR/Rogers, Neb.), Brianna Miller (SR/Hartington, Neb.) and Makenna Freeman (SR/Omaha, Neb.). All three had a factor in CSM's success Saturday night.
"All three seniors contributed tonight," Pruett said. "I'm really happy for Bri. She's a great kid and is really a spark plug for us. She played phenomenal with seven kills and hit .353."
Lexie Langley (JR/Fremont, Neb.) led the Flames with 11 kills, while Grace Werner (SO/Omaha, Neb.) had nine and Freeman finished with eight.
The Flames ran a 6-2 offense with setters Miranda Ring (FR/Neola, Iowa) and Lauren Anderson (JR/Gretna, Neb.). Ring had a match-high 22 assists and Anderson tallied 17.
"We had some changes in our lineup today," Pruett said. "I thought both setters did a really good job. We had equal distribution of the ball and it showed. Five of our hitters hit over .350 tonight and you can win a lot of games when you do that."
Pruett said another factor in the match was hitting efficiency.
"Offensively we played well," he said. "We only had nine hitting errors. Unforced errors has been a struggle this year so to only have nine is phenomenal.
Defensively, libero Rachel Cushing (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) finished with a match-high 23 digs.
"I thought Rachel Cushing was really good tonight," Pruett said. "She just tracks down a lot of balls that other people can't get. I also thought Lexie was good offensively and Kelsie Sears (SO/Ithaca, Neb.) did a good job hitting .500."
The Flames improve to 8-7 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 18-7 overall. Mount Marty drops to 1-14, 6-19. CSM returns to action Tuesday at home vs. Hastings College. Junior varsity starts at 6 p.m. and varsity plays at 7:30 p.m.
*In JV action Saturday, CSM won 2-1 by scores of 25-16, 22-25 and 15-9.
