Flames get big, much-needed win over Dordt

OMAHA, Neb. – A relief.

That's how College of Saint Mary Volleyball Coach Rick Pruett described his team's emotions Saturday night.

The Flames snapped a four-match losing streak with a huge 3-0 win over Dordt University Saturday. CSM cruised to the win in three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.

"Relief – that's a much-needed win," Pruett said. "It was a lot of fun."

Dordt entered the match as the No. 12 team in the country, while CSM was No. 18. But the Flames have struggled as of late against four other ranked GPAC opponents.

"We had to find our grit back," Pruett said. "We had to get back to hard work, fight – our culture. And we said today had to be the day.

"I thought we did that from the beginning today. It was fun to watch. That's the volleyball we are capable of."

Lexie Langley (JR/Fremont, Neb.) led the Flames with 13 kills. Teammate Kamryn Willman (SR/Grand Island, Neb.) tallied 11 kills, Rachel Rosenquist (SO/Dakota Dunes, SD) belted 10 and Grace Werner (SO/Omaha, Neb.) had seven. Setter Lauren Anderson (JR/Gretna, Neb.) finished with 39 assists and Rachel Cushing (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) had a match-high 19 digs.

"In the huddle after the game we said 'welcome back' to our middles," Pruett said. "They've struggled lately but today they were phenomenal. We needed that from them.

"I also thought Lauren Anderson played her best match of the year. She was getting the ball to hitters in a position where they could put it away."

CSM returns to competition Friday at Briar Cliff University.
