NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – A month ago College Saint Mary Coach Rick Pruett would not have predicted his team to start the season with a perfect 10-0 record. But that's exactly what has happened.
"I would've told you that it would've been tough to start the season that strong," Pruett said when asked about his expectations. "I would have never said 10-0. I would've said that I'd be really happy with 8-2."
But the Flames are still undefeated after winning two more matches Saturday at the Labor Day Classic. CSM defeated Mayville State 3-0 by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-18 and then cruised past Tabor College 3-0 with scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-16.
"This is good for our confidence," Pruett said. "I'm very happy with how we've played for our first 10 matches. We are definitely ahead of where I thought we'd be at this point."
Against Mayville State, Makenna Freeman (SR/Omaha, Neb.) led the Flames with 14 kills and 15 digs. Teammate Grace Werner (SO/Omaha, Neb.) added 11 kills, while both Lexie Langley (JR/Fremont, Neb.) and Kamryn Willman (SR/Grand Island, Neb.) finished with seven. Rachel Cushing (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) had a match-high 27 digs and Langley chipped in with 13. Setter Lauren Anderson (JR/Gretna, Neb.) tossed up 37 assists.
"I thought Mayville State was really good defensively," Pruett said. "They were picking up a lot of balls. I told the team that we were going to need to win the long rallies and it would be a battle of who could withstand the long rallies."
Against Tabor, the Flames got all 19 players in uniform into the match. Freeman paced CSM again with nine kills, Anderson tallied 25 assists, Cushing finished with 18 digs and Langley added 11 digs.
"It was good to get all our players in and help them gain good experience with large crowds," Pruett said.
The Flames open conference play on Wednesday at Hastings College. Junior varsity starts at 6 p.m. and varsity plays at 7:30 p.m.
