Flames finish weekend with a perfect 4-0 mark

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – A perfect 4-0.

The College of Saint Mary volleyball team ended the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record at the Keiser University Chick-Fil-A Classic. After winning two on Friday, the Flames notched another two victories Saturday.

CSM, ranked No. 18 in the country, battled No. 20-ranked Columbia University to a 5-set marathon win that lasted over 2 hours and 20 minutes. Then the Flames cruised to a 3-0 victory over Olivet Nazarene University.

"Overall, I'm very pleased," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We played great team volleyball all weekend. Everyone chipped in and played a role."

In the first contest, CSM slipped by Columbia with a 25-23 win in the first set and then lost the second set 25-21. The Flames easily won the third set 25-12, but struggled in the fourth set and fell 25-15. CSM won the final set 15-5.

Lexie Langley (JR/Fremont, Neb.) had a standout match with 21 kills and 20 digs for CSM. Teammates Grace Werner (SO/Omaha, Neb.) and Makenna Freeman (SR/Omaha, Neb.) both tallied 15 kills, while Rachel Rosenquist (SO/Dakota Dunes, SD) added nine. Setter Lauren Anderson (JR/Gretna, Neb.) finished with 56 assists. Also for the Flames, Rachel Cushing (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) tallied a match-high 33 digs and Anderson added 10.

In the second match, the Flames got 16 different players into the action.

Kamryn Willman (SR/Grand Island, Neb.) and Freeman led CSM with 10 kills each. Anderson tallied 28 assists and Cushing had 16 digs.

"Offensively we showed our firepower all weekend," Pruett said. "I thought Lexie played great. It's great to have her healthy again. I thought Grace played really well on the right side. Rachel Cushing was phenomenal again and getting to balls that most people don't get to. And Lauren did a good job running the offense.

"I thought we stuck to our vision of We > Me all weekend."

The Flames finish the weekend at 4-0 and return to action next weekend at the Concordia University Invitational.
