Flames earn big win over Midland on Senior Day

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary tennis team made Senior Day a triumphant one, snapping a five-match losing streak to Midland University with an impressive 4-3 victory Sunday night at Genesis Westroads.

The Flames hadn't beaten the Warriors since their regular-season dual in 2021. That year, Midland avenged the loss in the GPAC Tournament.

On a day in which CSM honored seniors Carolyna Truong and Darece Van Auken, Coach Mike Johnson said this year's victory was exactly what the doctor ordered, because it required some clutch play.

"This was the match that they needed, because they had to play well in the pressure situations to come up with this win,'' he said.

The Flames (7-2 overall, 2-2 GPAC) snatched the doubles point by sweeping the three matches. Callista Uchill and Noel Moreno beat Ai Katsura and Graziela Dallagnol 6-4 at No. 1; Yana Gupta and Abrianna Reynosa defeated Andrea Vasquez and Lillie Johnston 6-3 at No. 2; and Truong and Iyaanah Pardiwalla downed Malena Hernandez and Ana Larreal 6-0 at No. 3.

CSM won three of the six singles matches to secure the team victory. Midland dropped to 4-10 and 2-3.

At No. 1, Uchill handled Katsura 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2, Moreno fought past Vasquez 6-2, 6-4. And at No. 5, Truong beat Larreal 6-1, 6-2

Midland's Dallagnol nipped Pardiwalla 6-2, 7-6 (6) at No. 3; Hernandez defeated Gupta 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4; and Johnston battled past Van Auken 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) at No. 6,

"Callista played fantastic at No. 1,'' Johnson said. "Iyaanah at No. 3 didn't win the match, but she had a great comeback in that second set. And Noel at No. 2 did a nice job pulling out that second set. It was good performances from everybody.''

Before and after the match, the Flames honored Truong and Van Auken for their dedication to the program, with their families in attendance.

"I'm excited for Darece and Lyna to enter their next chapter of life and tennis, and grateful that I was able to coach them,'' Johnson said. "I'm certain wherever they go next, they will be a great addition to their team.''

CSM's next scheduled match is Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Hastings College.
