Tennis team wins 3 more to finish spring break trip 4-0

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Saint Mary tennis team completed a wildly successful spring break trip, winning all three of its matches on Wednesday and Thursday to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Flames beat St. Mary's College of Maryland 6-1, edged College of Wooster 4-3 and blanked Stevenson (Md.) University 7-0 in the PTR Spring Tennis Fest at Chaplin Park.

In Wednesday's win over St. Mary's College of Maryland, the highest drama came at No. 1 singles, where Callista Uchil outlasted Lily Ganjbaksh 6-7 (9-7), 6-2, 1-0 (11-9).

"Callista delivered a standout performance, showing tremendous resilience in a 2½-hour battle,'' CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "After a tough first-set tiebreak loss, she stayed patient in the wind, picked her moments to attack and closed it out 11–9 in the third-set breaker. It was a highly tactical match against a very consistent opponent—Callista managed the conditions and the moment extremely well.

"With the exception of a close match at No. 2, we were able to sweep the remaining positions for a strong team result. This match definitely showed both the decorum and adversity of college tennis."

On Thursday against Wooster, Johnson adjusted the lineup to create more match opportunities, "and it paid off with highly competitive tennis across the board. Four matches went to third-set tiebreakers, which says everything about the level of competition and fight from our group."

The CSM coach said Noel Moreno and Darece Van Auken showed great resilience, battling back from a set down to force third-set breakers.

"The highlights were Iyaanah's 10–6 tiebreak win and Noel closing out hers 10–8 -- both showing composure and grit under pressure,'' Johnson said. "These are the kinds of matches that build toughness — mentally and physically — and it was great to see the team come through in those moments."

On Thursday in the easy win over Stevenson, Johnson said the highlight was Maribel Baltazar, who earned a doubles win alongside Abrianna Reynosa and followed it up with a victory at No. 6 singles.

"Maribel has been with the team for two years and continues to show great improvement,'' Johnson said. "She is a hard worker and a great teammate, and it was fun for the team to rally behind her today.''

The Flames return to action on Sunday with a 10 a.m. nonconference matchup in Crete, Neb., against Baker (Kan.) University.
