ORANGE CITY, Iowa – In three of the four quarters on Saturday, the College of Saint Mary basketball team committed only eight total turnovers.
However, the third quarter was a different story.
The Flames committed 10 of their 18 turnovers in the third, eliminating any chance of a comeback in a 98-59 Great Plains Athletic Conference loss to Northwestern College at the Bultman Center.
"Overall, we competed for three quarters, but the third quarter killed us,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "They ran transition offense really well. Our 18 turnovers definitely helped them. They played physical and we didn't play well against that intensity.''
Northwestern improved to 15-11 overall and 11-9 in GPAC play, while CSM fell to 3-23 and 2-18.
Madelyn Gaughen scored 10 of her team-high 17 points in the first half on 5-of-8 shooting, as the Flames trailed 47-34 at the intermission.
"G had a great game,'' Miller said.
However, the Red Raiders scored the first eight of the second half to stretch their lead to 21, and they never looked back.
Also for CSM, Haley Debuse scored 11 points, while Freda Moore added nine. Jai'La Porter grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
"Overall, not enough consistent contribution for scoring overall, because we didn't move the ball enough,'' Miller said. "Looking ahead, we want to focus on rebounding and transition defense.''
CSM returns to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. GPAC game at Midland University in Fremont, Neb.
