Cold shooting plagues Flames in loss
OMAHA, Neb. – Shooting woes plagued College of Saint Mary in its 72-49 Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball loss to Waldorf University Saturday at the Lied Fitness Center.
The Flames made just 21 of 65 (32.3%) on all field goals, including 1 of 12 (8.3%) from 3-point range. They also sank just 6 of 13 (46.2%) from the free-throw line. The lack of accuracy prevented the Flames from avenging their 73-72 loss to the Warriors on Jan. 18.
"We did not shoot it well,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "We had an OK amount of turnovers (12), but they capitalized well. They had 13 points off our turnovers.''
The Flames (1-24 overall, 0-19 GPAC) were still in contention with 3:01 remaining in the first half when Ella Klusman made a 3-pointer to pull the hosts within 27-20. But Waldorf (6-17, 4-14) outscored CSM 11-4 the rest of the way to lead 38-24 at the intermission, and the Flames got no closer than 13 in the second half.
The 1-2 punch of Brooke Dial (22 points, 14 rebounds) and Edosa Ogbemudia (20 points, 13 rebounds) were too much to overcome.
"We gave up 14 offensive boards, so that's still an area where we're struggling,'' Miller said. "Overall, their length and athleticism just beat us.''
The Flames placed three players in double figures. Freda Moore had 14 points and five rebounds, Madelyn Gaughen added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Jazmyne Villalobos pitched in 10 points.
"I think Jaz played a great game,'' Miller said. "She did a good job getting downhill, moving the ball early, talking and being locked in on defense.''
CSM returns to action Feb. 15 with a 2 p.m. GPAC contest in Sioux City against Morningside University.
