Ravens drop CSM; Debuse makes all-tourney

HONOLULU, Hawaii – It's not reflected in the win-loss record, but the College of Saint Mary is making progress on the basketball court.

Those were the sentiments of coach Natalie Miller after Benedictine (Kan.) College pulled away after an even first quarter for a 75-49 victory Friday, concluding the Flames' participation in the Hoops in Hawaii Classic at the Shark Tank.

"We played some of the best basketball we've played this season in this tournament,'' Miller said. "Specifically, our first halves were really strong. We definitely had some strong spurts.''

Indiviually, junior Haley Debuse was honored after the game with her selection to the All-Tournament Team. Debuse had 12 points and five rebounds in Friday's loss, following her 20-point, four-rebound effort on Thursday.

"Overall, she had a great tournament,'' Miller said.

In the first quarter, CSM (1-12) stood toe-to-toe with the Ravens, who improved to 10-2 on the season. Madelyn Gaughen and Ella Klusman led the way with five points each as the Flames were tied at 18-all through the first 10 minutes.

Benedictine grabbed 12 of its 16 offensive rebounds in the first half to help it pull ahead 35-26 at the intermission.

"The first half I felt like we played really well, but we got killed on the offensive rebounds,'' Miller said.

The Ravens stretched their lead to 19 after three quarters, as CSM couldn't get untracked offensively. The Flames finished 17 of 58 (29.3%) from the field, including 3 of 17 (17.6%) from 3-point range. They were 12 of 21 (57.1%) at the line.

"We didn't shoot well at all,'' Miller said. "We got open looks. We got open shots. Even free throws, we just struggled. I think we were definitely feeling the travel and two games in a row a little bit.''

Gaughen added 11 points and four rebounds, while Klusman finished with eight points and five rebounds.

After returning from the islands, the Flames will open the new year on Jan. 2 at home with a 6 p.m. Great Plains Athletic Conference game against Morningside University.
