Chargers defeat CSM despite Debuse’s big day

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Junior Haley Debuse turned in an outstanding individual effort, but it wasn't nearly enough as Briar Cliff University ran past College of Saint Mary 118-59 Saturday in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball play at the Newman Flanagan Center.

Debuse scored a game-high 27 points, the most by a Flame in 69 games since Alyssa Marsh-Contreras scored 28 in a win over Midland on Feb. 9, 2022. She made 12-of-23 from the field, including 1-for-3 from 3-point range, along with a pair of throws. She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds and blocked two shots.

"Haley had an incredible game,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "She finished really well. Our whole team did a really good job of being intentional about getting her the ball.''

Ball handling continues to be an issue for CSM (1-10 overall, 0-7 GPAC), as it committed 35 turnovers resulting in a 50-5 edge in points off turnovers for the Chargers (9-2, 5-2). The easy baskets allowed Briar Cliff to shot 52.7% (49 of 93) from the field.

"We had way too many turnovers,'' Miller said. "They just rotated really well and pressured us really well, and we just didn't handle that.''

The Chargers sprinted to a commanding 60-25 halftime lead, allowing them to give their reserves plentiful playing time in the second half. BCU placed six players in double figures, led by Kennedy Benne's 17 points and eight steals.

Freda Moore and Meghan Keil added eight points apiece, with Moore grabbing five rebounds.

"We had some ladies that shot a lot better today,'' Miller said. "I felt like we took a step in our offensive efficiency at times. We saw little pieces that were good.''

CSM leaves for Honolulu on Tuesday and will play two games in the Hawaii Classic, facing Indiana Wesleyan University on Thursday at 5:15 CST and Benedictine (Kan.) College on Friday at 5:15 CST.
