Mustangs prove to be too much for CSM basketball

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside University outscored the College of Saint Mary basketball team in all four quarters Saturday.

The Mustangs defeated CSM 85-62 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference game.

Morningside was ahead 18-9 after the opening quarter and the Flames kept it within nine points for the second quarter before the Mustangs ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 41-24 lead at the intermission. Morningside then outscored the visiting team 26-21 in the third quarter and 18-7 in the fourth frame for the win.

"We had some really good moments again today," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "We cut it to nine points in the second quarter and then cut it to 12 points in the third quarter but couldn't sustain it. Morningside got too many points off turnovers and second-change points. That continues to be a theme and if we can just find a way to clean those two things up a little bit we would definitely be more competitive."

The Flames shot 40 percent from the floor, 36 percent from 3-point land and 70 percent from the free-throw line. Morningside shot 47 percent, 26 percent and 93 percent, respectively. The Mustangs won the rebounding battle 41-30 and CSM had 24 turnovers, compared to Morningside's 15.

Madison Camden led the Flames with 17 points, while Tia Murray also reached double figures with 12. Sidney Anderson scored eight and both Madison Guzman and Skye Giddings added seven. CSM's Ava Schroeder had a team-high eight rebounds and Murray pulled down seven. Guzman also tallied four assists and three steals.

"Ava did a really good job rebounding today and is showing more physicality on the boards," Walker said. "Madison Camden played well again today offensively and also did a good job on the boards. It was good to see Madison Guzman more aggressive offensively."

The loss drops CSM's conference record to 0-14 and overall mark to 1-18. Morningside improves to 8-6, 11-8. The Flames return to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. contest at Northwestern College.

"The great thing about this team is that they're not quitting," Walker said. "It's just a matter of being better consistently at the little things and giving ourselves an opportunity to be more successful."
