Late surge isn't enough for CSM basketball
HASTINGS, Neb. – College of Saint Mary Basketball Coach Kirk Walker said his squad had trouble putting together a full 40 minutes Wednesday night at Hastings College.
The Broncos defeated the Flames 76-57 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference tilt.
"We got off to another tough start tonight and were down 20 points at the end of the first quarter," Walker said. "We were really proud of the team for bouncing back and getting the game within 10 points at the start of the fourth quarter. It's kind of been the story of our season – we play really good basketball for 2 ½ to 3 quarters, but can't seem to put 40 minutes together."
Hastings led 27-7 after the opening quarter, but the Flames outscored the home team 25-17 in the second frame and 14-12 in the third quarter to close the gap. The Broncos bested CSM 20-11 in the final quarter to secure the win.
Tia Murray led the Flames with 16 points and nine rebounds. Teammate Jazmyne Villalobos came off the bench to score 11. Madison Camden finished with nine points, Skye Giddings added eight and Sidney Anderson tallied six points and eight rebounds.
"Jazz easily played her best offensive game tonight," Walker said. "That's directly attributable to the fact that she was looking to score finally. She's a good shooter – she just hasn't been willing to shoot and I thought she was really aggressive tonight. Skye had another good offensive performance and I thought Tia did a great job rebounding. Madison Guzman and Ava Schroeder were also more aggressive on the boards tonight which really helped."
The Flames shot 42 percent for the night, 39 percent from long distance and 50 percent from the free-throw line. Hastings was 44 percent, 30 percent and 42 percent, respectively. CSM outrebounded the Broncos 41-37.
"Turnovers were the difference again as Hastings had 26 points off our 21 turnovers," Walker said. "The first half we only had six turnovers, but we just missed too many shots around the rim. Overall, we're doing a better job of competing on the boards which has been a point of emphasis."
The Flames drop to 0-13 in the GPAC and 1-17 overall. CSM returns to action Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Morningside University.
