Jimmies defeat CSM in GPAC action
OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary Basketball Coach Kirk Walker saw some positives from his team Friday night. The Flames had a season-low number of turnovers and got some quality points off the bench.
Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough against the University of Jamestown. The Jimmies defeated CSM 87-52 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.
"I felt like we came out the first five minutes and played pretty good defensively," Walker said. "And we did a great job taking care of the basketball tonight. We had nine turnovers – which was a season low. We just didn't make enough shots to stay in the game, especially shots around the rim."
Jamestown outscored the Flames 21-10 in the opening quarter and 19-8 in the second frame to lead 40-18 at the intermission. The Jimmies bested CSM 30-11 in the third frame, but CSM outscored the visitors 23-17 in the fourth quarter.
Jamestown shot 51 percent for the night, 39 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free-throw line. CSM shot 28 percent, 25 percent and 72 percent, respectively.
"We're doing a good job getting to the free-throw line and making free throws," Walker said. "But we have to find some perimeter scoring."
Tia Murray led the Flames with 14 points and five rebounds. Skye Giddings canned 11 points, Sidney Anderson finished with nine and Ava Schroeder added eight.
"Skye had a good game," Walker said. "Probably her best overall game of the season. It was easily her best defensive game. And it was good to have Madison Guzman back."
Jamestown is now 6-6 in the GPAC and 10-8 overall. The Flames fall to 0-12, 1-16.
CSM returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Hastings College.
