Walker pleased with CSM's effort in loss to Jimmies

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – College of Saint Mary Basketball Coach Kirk Walker felt like Saturday's game was his team's most complete game of the season.

The Flames lost 84-70 to the University of Jamestown Saturday. The Great Plains Athletic Conference contest was a road game for CSM.

"I'm really proud of the effort that our team gave today," Walker said. "Jamestown started off on a run, but we maintained our composure and found a way to bounce back and lead after the opening quarter. This was the most competitive we have played for 40 minutes this year."

The Flames outscored the Jimmies 20-19 in the opening quarter, but the home team bested CSM 26-20 in the second frame. Jamestown won the third quarter by a 14-11 advantage and then sealed the win by outscoring CSM 25-19 in the final frame.

"We were down eight points going into the fourth quarter, but responded very well and took a 10-point game at 71-61 to a four-point game at 72-68," Walker said. "We had a little bit of a dry spell at that point, but we responded to every challenge today."

Tia Murray led the Flames with another season-high game. She scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Teammate Madison Camden tossed in 17 points and Skye Giddings added nine points. Madison Guzman had a team-high five assists.

"Skye shot the ball really well in the first half and hit all three of her 3-pointers," Walker said. "Tia and Madison Camden both had strong games for the second game in a row. And we got 18 points out of our bench after having only one point from our bench against Hastings."

College of Saint Mary was 43 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the free-throw line. The Flames pulled down 35 rebounds. Jamestown was 41 percent from the floor, 28 percent from long distance and 75 percent from the charity stripe. The Jimmies had 40 rebounds.

"We shared the ball very well today," Walker said. "We had 16 assists on 22 field goals and I felt like our communication defensively really helped our half-court defense be better."

The Flames drop to 0-7 in the GPAC and 1-9 overall. Jamestown improves to 3-4, 5-5.

"I told our players before the game that we're not that far away," Walker said. "We just have to clean some things up and compete tougher mentally and physically. I felt that the ladies really responded to that challenge today and we can see the obvious team growth.

"We're just going to keep plugging away and getting better. I know those wins are out there for us."

CSM returns to action Saturday with a home game vs. Bellevue University. Tip-off will be at 6 p.m. because of College of Saint Mary's winter graduation earlier in the afternoon.
