Offensive struggles hurt CSM in loss to York
OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team couldn't get much going offensively Saturday.
The Flames suffered a tough loss to York University 69-37 in the second day of the CSM MH Hospitality Classic. In the earlier game Saturday, Waldorf University beat Haskell Indian Nations University 67-61.
"Tonight was a little disappointing after the start we got off to last night," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "We just didn't play as well defensively and we had to settle for too many jump shots. York was doing a great job getting to the paint and getting shots around the rim and we were settling for perimeter jumps shots."
York shot 43 percent from the floor, 38 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the free-throw line. CSM shot just 19 percent from the floor, 0 percent (0-for-13) from long distance and 63 percent from the charity stripe.
"They shot it unbelievably well," Walker said. "We told our team beforehand that York shoots a lot of 3s and that they make a lot of 3s. We didn't get out on their shooters like we needed to."
Tia Murray paced College of Saint Mary with 14 points. Teammate Madelyn Gaughen had nine points. Murray, Madison Guzman and Skye Giddings all had a team-high six rebounds.
Walker said the positive from the night was that the Flames "played much better in the second half" and fought until the end.
All four teams – including CSM – went 1-1 in the tournament. The Flames return to play Saturday at Peru State at 5 p.m.
"The sun will come up tomorrow and we'll bounce back," Walker said.
