Lewandowski's double-double leads CSM in loss

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Clare Lewandowski (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) had a double-double for the Flames Wednesday night.

The senior's strong night was a highlight for College of Saint Mary in an 83-59 loss to Northwestern College.

Lewandowski scored 15 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and dished four assists to lead CSM in all three categories.

"I feel like this is the best game that Clare has played from an aggressiveness standpoint on offense since her freshman year," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "I thought she really competed on both ends of the floor."

Madelyn Turner (SR/Bennington, Neb.) was the only other CSM player to score in double figures. She tossed in 10 points. Teammates Bailey White (SR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Kenzi Hoit (SR/Omaha, Neb.) both canned eight points. The four seniors accounted for 41 of the team's 59 points in the game.

"Maddie Turner had another good game and I felt like she was ready to go from the start," Walker said.

The Flames got down early Wednesday as they were outscored 30 to 15 in the first quarter. CSM had just eight points in the second quarter and trailed 50-23 at the intermission. But the Flames rallied to outscore the home team 22-17 in the third quarter to close the gap. The Red Raiders then bested CSM 16-14 in the fourth frame.

"We were all a little frustrated at halftime," Walker said. "We are a Jekyll and Hyde team. I really challenged them to go after it because I know how much better we can be. They really responded and played with so much more urgency and effort in the second half. We stayed right with them and cut into their lead in the third quarter.

"We keep telling our players that they have it in them, but we have to find a way to do what they did the second half for a full game to have a chance to win in this league. There's still some wins out there for us to get if we can bottle our second-half effort for the rest of the year."

CSM is now 2-15 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 5-18 overall. Northwestern improves to 11-6, 16-7. The Flames return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. with a home contest vs. Dakota Wesleyan University.
