Hot-shooting DWU squad defeats the Flames
MITCHELL, S.D. – The College of Saint Mary basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Dakota Wesleyan team Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers defeated CSM 100-40 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.
"I felt like we were going to show up and play today with some energy and enthusiasm," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "But we did not play up to our ability level."
DWU outscored the Flames 30-13 in the opening quarter, 21-5 in the second frame, 28-15 in the third quarter and 21-7 in the final frame.
The Tigers shot 59 percent from the floor, 58 percent from 3-point range and 85 percent from the free-throw line. College of Saint Mary shot 30 percent from the floor, 21 percent from long distance and 42 percent from the charity stripe.
"Dakota Wesleyan took advantage of all of our breakdowns and shot an incredible percentage from the 3-point line," Walker said. "We got to the free-throw line enough, but once again did not make free throws and we gave them too many offensive rebounds."
Bailey White (SR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) led the Flames with 12 points. Teammate Madelyn Turner (SR/Bennington, Neb.) added six.
"I thought Kylee (Kamauoha-Phillips) played a pretty good game today overall," Walker said. "And I felt like Clare (Lewandowski) competed again on the inside against their post players.
"I have to do a better job putting our players in position to have success. Pressure defense is getting to us and that's all we're going to see moving forward."
With the loss, the Flames drop to 0-3 in the GPAC and 2-5 overall. The Tigers, who were ranked No. 7 in the most recent NAIA poll, improve to 2-1, 4-1. CSM returns to action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. conference contest at Hastings College.
