Two in a row: CSM basketball wins again
OMAHA, Neb. – For the second night in a row, the College of Saint Mary basketball team scored 60 points. And for the second night in a row, the Flames walked off the court with a win.
College of Saint Mary defeated Waldorf University 60-37 Friday in the CSM Classic. In the afternoon game, Iowa Wesleyan University beat York University 84-65.
The Flames are now 2-0 to open the season.
"The best thing about this game is that we found a way to win," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said.
Friday's game was a low-scoring affair for the first half. CSM outscored Waldorf 9-4 in the opening quarter, but an injury to CSM's Sidney Anderson (SO/Omaha, Neb.) in the second quarter put the Flames on their heels a bit. Waldorf outscored CSM 14-11 in that quarter to send the game to the intermission with CSM leading by two points.
But the Flames regrouped at halftime and went on to score 20 points in both the third and fourth quarters to secure the win.
"Our players came out after halftime and put two good quarters together," Walker said. "No one person stood out, but we got a bunch of good performances and found a way to win by committee."
Nobody scored in double digits for either team in the contest.
College of Saint Mary had 11 players make the scoreboard, led by nine points from Kenzi Hoit (SR/Omaha, Neb.). Teammates Allison Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Anderson finished with seven points each.
Allisa Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Clare Lewandowski (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) both grabbed eight rebounds for the Flames and Hoit finished with seven.
"Madelyn Gaughen (FR/Cedar Bluffs, Neb.) really played well tonight," Walker said. "She does a great job fundamentally and is always ready when her number is called. Kylee Kamauoha-Phillips (FR/Honolulu, Hawaii) played extended minutes tonight coming off injury and really impacted the game on defense. And I thought Reilly Palmer (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) played more relaxed tonight.
"I feel our newcomers are starting to figure things out and that will be huge for us moving forward."
The Flames shot 36 percent from the floor, compared to Waldorf's 26 percent. CSM had 15 turnovers and the Warriors tallied 23.
CSM returns to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. at home vs. Peru State College.
