Flames capture third straight GPAC match
OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary ran its Great Plains Athletic Conference win streak to three on Wednesday with a 25-17, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18 volleyball victory over Mount Marty University at the Lied Fitness Center Fieldhouse.
After starting 0-2 in the GPAC, the Flames are now above .500 in league play for the first time this season at 3-2, while improving their overall record to 10-5. Mount Marty dropped to 8-8 and 1-4.
"We set some goals after those first two losses,'' CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We needed to win those three, and it's nice that we were able to do that. We're starting to play better every time out. I'm really happy with how the girls are starting to figure it out. They've really stuck together as a team.''
Junior Madalyn Welp dominated from the right side to lead the Flames' attack. The 6-foot-1 Sioux City East graduate matched her career high with 15 kills and hit a sizzling .429. She added four digs and three block assists.
"She's been our most consistent hitter all year long, as far as the number of kills she gives us,'' Pruett said. "People are going to triple-block Azaria (Green), and when that happens someone else needs to get kills and Madalyn does it.''
Junior Caitlyn McCormack added nine kills and 10 digs, while freshman Mya Weber gave the team a lift in the middle with eight kills on .333 efficiency, along with a team-high two solo blocks and five block assists.
Others complimenting Welp at the net were Azaria Green (8 kills), Caylin Barnett (7) and Jadeyn Smidt (6).
For Smidt, a 5-11 junior from Gretna, Neb., it was a career high in kills. She made the varsity late last season and has steadily worked into a contributing rotation player.
"She just really managed what I exactly asked her to do,'' Pruett said. "I was really proud of how she played.
"She's fought hard. This is a kid that wasn't a starter on her high school team and didn't even know if she was going to play at the next level and we gave her an opportunity. She's kind of a no-nonsense player and person, and I love it. She's very intense and very competitive, and she wants to get better every time out. Those are the good stories I love.''
Kaitlyn Busby (25 assists) and Kennedy Buck (22) ran the offense well, while Elen Pruett (15 digs) and Krissy Radicia (13) continued their steady back-row play.
CSM returns to action on Saturday with a 5 p.m. GPAC home match against sixth-rated Northwestern College back in the Lied Fitness Center Fieldhouse.
