Quick start doesn’t translate to Flames win

OMAHA, Neb. – An inability to capitalize on a quick start Saturday led to a stinging loss for the College of Saint Mary volleyball team.

A fired-up Waldorf squad had all the answers in key moments and overtook the Flames 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action at the Lied Fitness Center.

"A very disappointing loss at home,'' CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We've had opportunities to take control of our schedule and we haven't done that.''

The Flames dropped to 11-8 overall and 2-4 in GPAC play, while Waldorf improved to 8-7 and 2-4.

CSM had things in order early, sprinting to a 13-4 lead in the opening set and winning it handily behind six kills from Liz Henrichson.

The Flames got within 22-21 in set two, but the Warriors won three of the next four points to even match. CSM's last lead in the third set came at 19-18 before Waldorf closed with a charge. In the fourth set, Waldorf used a 5-0 burst to turn a 14-12 lead into a 19-12 advantage, and the visitors closed it out from there.

Grace Werner led the Flames with 18 kills while hitting .244, while Henrichson added 10 terminations and a .261 hitting percentage. Miranda Ring had 24 assists and Kaitlyn Busby added 19. Elen Pruett made a team-high 21 digs and Krissy Radicia had 18.

CSM was outhit by the Warriors, .193-.140. The Flames also made 27 hitting errors, 10 more than their opponent.

College of Saint Mary will try to right the ship on Friday when it travels to Briar Cliff for another GPAC match.
