Strong blocking leads Midland past CSM

OMAHA, Neb. – The best way Rick Pruett could explain his volleyball team's performance Wednesday night was a reference to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The Flames lost a rough match 3-1 to Midland University in Great Plains Athletic Conference play. The Warriors won by scores of 25-14, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-11.

"We're still very inconsistent," Pruett said. "We're Jekyll and Hyde. We beat some very good teams and then turn around and play poorly."

CSM knocked off the top team in the country Saturday in Concordia University but struggled Wednesday and had a negative hitting percentage.

"We had more hitting errors than kills," Pruett said.

Perhaps the biggest stat of the night was in the blocking department. The Warriors dominated play at the net. Midland compiled 44 blocking assists and two solo blocks compared to CSM's eight blocking assists and two solo blocks. Midland middle blocker Abbey Ringler alone tallied 14 blocks.

"We allowed them to get 46 blocks against us," Pruett said. "We talked about not hitting to their middle blocker and we kept doing it. So these are the outcomes that happen."

Azaria Green – fresh off being named the NAIA Attacker of the Week on Tuesday – led CSM with 10 kills, while Grace Werner added nine and Alex Radcliffe had seven. Lauren Anderson finished with 20 assists and teammate Miranda Ring contributed 14. Ring also had a team-high 15 digs, while Krissy Radicia had 12 and Rachel Cushing added 11.

"Our only bright spot today was Azaria," Pruett said. "She had 10 kills and hit .364."

The Flames drop to 9-5 in the GPAC and 21-6 overall. Midland improves to 9-5, 13-9.

CSM has two remaining GPAC contests left – both on the road. The Flames travel to Mount Marty University Saturday for a 3 p.m. game. JV will play at 1:30 p.m.

*In JV action Wednesday, Midland won 2-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-18.
