Flames suffer tough loss to Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – In a big showdown with two of the top 12 teams in the country, the University of Jamestown volleyball team knocked off College of Saint Mary 3-1 Saturday.

The Jimmies won the Great Plains Athletic Conference tilt by scores of 25-15, 25-17, 23-25 and 25-16.

The Flames, who were ranked No. 9 in the NAIA heading into the match, fall to 8-4 in the GPAC and 19-5 overall. Jamestown, who was ranked No. 12, improves to 10-1, 17-7.

"This is not the outcome nor the effort I wanted or expected," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We just never got in rhythm and relied on nonaggressive shots in the sets we lost. The first two sets were not very good volleyball. We followed our good plays with an immediate error.

"Our mental toughness is not where I think it should be at this point and it has cost us points and matches against strong teams."

Azaria Green led the Flames with 11 kills, while Kamryn Willman belted 10 and Alex Radcliffe had nine. Lauren Anderson pushed up 24 assists and teammates Miranda Ring tallied 14. Defensively, Rachel Cushing finished with 24 digs, Lexie Langley added 12 and Anderson had nine. Willman also had five blocks, while Green tallied four.

"Kamryn played well with 10 kills, .290 hitting and five blocks," Pruett said.

The Flames step out of conference play this week with a nonconference contest vs. Peru State College. The home match is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Junior varsity starts at 6 p.m.
