Flames suffer disappointing loss to Dordt
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Less than a day after the College of Saint Mary volleyball posted its biggest win of the season, the Flames suffered a disappointing loss Saturday afternoon.
No. 11-ranked CSM beat No. 2-ranked Northwestern College Friday night in a thrilling five-set GPAC showdown. But the five-set magic wasn't there Saturday afternoon as the Flames lost 3-2 to Dordt University.
The Defenders won by scores of 18-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25 and 17-15.
CSM drops to 5-3 in the GPAC and 16-4 overall. Dordt won just its third match of the season and improved to 2-6, 3-11.
"Not a great way to follow up a big win on the road than with a bad loss on the road," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "Give Dordt credit – they played well and we didn't match their energy. We had so many chances but kept making errors and not good decisions when we needed something big to happen.
"I'm really disappointed with our blocking and our defense. Just disappointed all together. The GPAC is tough and you have to come mentally ready to play and we just didn't."
Dordt hit .244 on the afternoon, while CSM hit .225 but the big difference came at the net. Dordt had 25 blocks assists and three solo blocks, while the Flames had four block assists and one solo block.
Kamryn Willman led CSM with 19 kills, while Mackenzie Vitosh tallied 15, Grace Werner had 12 and Lexie Langley added 11. Lauren Anderson dished out 31 assists, while teammate Miranda Ring had 29. Rachel Cushing contributed 18 digs and Anderson added 10.
"On the bright side, Kamryn and Mackenzie were great in the middle offensively and so was Grace," Pruett said.
The Flames are off until Friday when they play host to Briar Cliff University. Junior varsity starts at 6 p.m. with varsity slated for 7:30 p.m.
*In JV action Saturday afternoon, Dordt beat CSM 2-0 by scores of 25-17 and 25-20.
