Flames fight off slow start to get win over Doane

CRETE, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary volleyball team shook off a slow start Saturday and was able to leave the court with a win. The Flames defeated Doane University 3-1 in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

CSM dropped the opening set 25-23 to the Tigers. But then the Flames rallied to win the second set 25-15, won the third set 25-14 and took the fourth set 29-27.

"We came out really slow and never really played with that energy that we normally play with," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We can't continue to dig ourselves in holes and think we are always going to get out of it. We got through it and any win in the GPAC is still a good win."

Grace Werner led the Flames with 15 kills, while teammate Lexie Langley tallied 12, Kamryn Willman had 11 and both Lauryn Willman and Morgan Ramsey finished with eight. Setter Lauren Anderson compiled 35 assists and Miranda Ring chipped in with 17.

Defensively Rachel Cushing had a match-high 26 digs, Krissy Radicia came up with 16, Anderson finished with 14 and Langley had 13. Azaria Green had two solo blocks and four block assists at the net.

"Grace again carried us offensively with her 15 kills and Azaria led us with six blocks," Pruett said. "Rachel did great in the back row."

The Flames improve to 2-0 in the GPAC and 13-1 on the season. CSM resumes play Wednesday with a home match vs. Mount Marty University.

*In junior varsity action, CSM defeated Doane 2-0 with scores of 25-23 and 25-13.
