HASTINGS, Neb. – The Flames found themselves in a hole early but dug out of it and found a way to win two matches Friday at the Hastings Classic.
The College of Saint Mary volleyball team posted a come-from-behind win vs. Oklahoma Wesleyan University 3-2 and then cruised past Culver-Stockton 3-0.
In the first match, Oklahoma Wesleyan won the first set 25-22 and then took the second set 25-18. But the Flames did what they are known for doing – they battled back to win the third set 25-18, then the fourth set 25-22. They clinched the win with a 15-11 victory in the fifth and deciding set.
"Down 0-2 and we found a way to muster up a comeback and win 3-2," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "This Oklahoma Wesleyan team is really good – maybe the best team we've played so far this year. Their outside hitter is an international player that may be the best hitter in the country. I was proud of our ladies."
Kamryn Willman led the way for CSM. She tallied a whopping 18 kills. Teammate Grace Werner added 10 and Azaria Green finished with nine. Lauren Anderson compiled 27 set assists and Miranda Ring had 16. Defensively Rachel Cushing had a team-high 27 digs and Krissy Radicia chipped in with 14.
"Kamryn was phenomenal with 18 kills, a .469 hitting percentage and two blocks," Pruett said. "Grace was really good again offensively. And our defense was strong the last three sets.
"We had a lot of unforced errors in the first two sets that cost us but we got better as the match went on and found a way to win it. It was a great team effort."
The Flames had an easier go of it in the second match as they won by scores of 25-13, 25-21, 25-16.
"It was nice to be able to get everybody in this match," Pruett said. "Everyone did well with their opportunities. It was also nice to give the players some rest with the air conditioning not working in the gym. It was extremely hot in there."
Morgan Ramsey paced the Flames with eight kills, while Green added seven. Ring finished with 15 assists and Anderson added 12. Cushing had a team-high 11 digs.
"Morgan led the way for us, followed by Azaria," Pruett said. "They both had great matches."
College of Saint Mary improves to 5-1 on the season and resumes play Saturday in the Hastings Classic.
