Skanes adds GPAC outdoor long jump title
FREMONT, Neb. – Freshman Imani Skanes completed a sweep of the conference long jump titles, adding the outdoor crown at Heedum Field on Friday at the GPAC Championships to the indoor crown she won in February.
The reigning NAIA indoor national champion won Friday's event with a best jump of 5.78 meters (18 feet, 11¾ inches), punching her ticket to the national outdoor meet. Although Skanes fouled three times, two of her jumps were well ahead of runner-up Kiki Nyanok of Concordia University best mark of 5.33 (17-6).
"We had a very good start to our championships,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "Imani put a CSM long jumper atop the podium for the second year in a row, earning the outdoor GPAC title to match her indoor GPAC title.''
Through six of 22 events, the Flames ended the first day of the two-day meet in fifth place with 18.5 points. Doane University led with 61 points, followed by Dordt University (59), Concordia (35.5) and Mount Marty University (19).
Junior Allison Isaacson got the day started for CSM in fine fashion, winning the school's first-ever pole vault medal. She placed seventh at 3.13 meters (10-3¼). Isaacson also made the long jump final, taking eighth at 5.15 (16-10¾). She earned all-conference honors in both events, as the top eight individuals in each event earn that status.
"Field events had some awesome firsts,'' Gordon said.
Skanes qualified for Saturday's 100-meter final by nabbing the eighth and final qualifying spot in 12.15.
In the 4x800 relay, CSM placed a solid third, with Carly Henderson, Kara Muller, Corinne Mead and Olivia Elbert clocking 9:28.32. The top three finishers in relays also earn all-conference honors, therefore the Flames quartet met the standard for those accolades.
