Craft smashes program record in 10K
CRETE, Neb. – Kiley Craft smashed the College of Saint Mary program record in the 10,000 meters en route to a victory on Wednesday at the James Dutcher Memorial hosted by Doane University.
The senior out of Shanley High School in Fargo, N.D., turned in a winning time of 39 minutes, 29.39 seconds, more than a minute and 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up finisher. It also smashed her own program record by more than two minutes.
"Kiley Craft put on an absolute show in the 10K, running an extremely smart and confident race, start to finish,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon said. "She cracked the top 40 nationally.''
The Flames also turned in a 1-2 finish in the 5,000, with Kara Muller winning in 18:54.21 and Carly Henderson placing second in 19:06.66.
Due to the weather forecast, the distance carnival was held on Wednesday, and some of the throws were contested on Thursday.
The "Flame Throwers,'' as they affectionately call themselves, fared well on Thursday.
Clare Ullery placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 38.20 meters (125 feet, 4 inches), just five centimeters off her program record.
Rylie Preister was the big surprise in the same event, launching a big personal best of 37.74 (123-10) to place 11th and move her to No. 2 in program history.
Tavia Williams also set a personal best in the discus of 37.04 (121-6) to take 12th. That mark is now fourth in program history.
