Craft, Elbert, Henderson win at Concordia
SEWARD, Neb. – College of Saint Mary crowned three individual event champions and four runners-up on Monday to highlight its participation in the Concordia Invitational outdoor track & field meet.
The three champions came on the track:
Olivia Elbert ran 2:17.72 to win the 800 and edge teammate Kara Muller, who was second in 2:19.91. There were 22 competitors in the event.
Carly Henderson captured the 1,500 in 5:03.22, just ahead of teammate Corinne Mead, who was second among the 20 entries in 5:08.40.
And Kiley Craft reigned in the 5,000, topping the nine-woman field in a personal-best 18:49.55, the No. 2 time in program history.
"It was very cool to see our distance crew sweep the middle- and long-distance races at this meet,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "Kiley Craft put on an absolute show! She had a masterfully run race. It was very cold by that time in the evening, and to run the best time you've ever run takes great training and a lot of heart.''
In addition to Muller and Mead, the Flames grabbed two more seconds in the field events.
Mikaiya Rodgers took second among 24 entries in the long jump with a best effort of 5.50 meters (18 feet, ½ inch).
And Imani Skanes placed second among 22 entries in the triple jump with a program-record effort of 11.84 meters (38-10¼), which meets the national 'B' standard.
"Imani worked her way through a pretty stout triple jump competition,'' Gordon said.
The other program record came in the discus, where junior Clare Ullery, a Papillion-La Vista South graduate, placed 18th with a personal-best toss of 38.25 meters (125-6), which edged her own previous mark of 38.23 (125-5).
"Clare had a great discus throw, even in cold conditions,'' Gordon said.
