Rhodes wins javelin at Jim Duncan Invitational
DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Madalynn Rhodes won the javelin, one of five more program records set by the College of Saint Mary track team, which turned in an outstanding performance on Friday in the Jim Duncan Invitational at famed Drake Stadium.
Competing against NCAA Division I schools like Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa, Creighton, Drake and Omaha, the Flames represented the NAIA well.
"It's not hyperbole to say we quietly had one of the best meets in program history, on the storied and historic blue oval of Drake Stadium,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said.
In many instances, the high level of competition brought out the best in the Flames.
Rhodes won the javelin with a personal-best and program-record heave of 38.74 meters.
"Montana (Rhodes' nickname) winning the javelin was a great capper for all of the great performances today,'' Gordon said.
Freshman Kara Muller set two of the five program records. In the 1,500 she ran 4:53.00 for seventh place and in the 5,000 she ran 18:35.34 for ninth.
Freshman Olivia Elbert set a program record in the 800, running 2:16.09 for ninth place.
And the Flames' 4 x 100 relay set a program record, clocking 49.34 for sixth place.
"This was another high-quality meet, and the Flames showed that they are up to the task of competing with anyone, at any level,'' Gordon said. "We are growing closer to being the program we aspire to be.''
In the long jump, Mikaiya Rodgers set a new outdoor personal best, going 5.61 meters for third place, which is No. 2 in program history. Kellesse Heard placed sixth in the same event at 5.47.
"Mikaiya and Kellesse once again do what seems to be their norm – being in the mix for finals and top spots in every meet,'' Gordon said.
