Caspersen places 18th at NAIA National Championships

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Claire Caspersen (FR/Cairo, Neb.) has a lot to be proud of.

The College of Saint Mary freshman advanced to the NAIA National Championships in both Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field this year.

Caspersen placed 18th at the outdoor championships Thursday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala. She took seventh place in the event in the indoor championships back in March.

Caspersen's throws on Thursday were 11.82m/38-9.5, scratch and 12.85m/42-2.

"It's not the outcome I wanted today, but I know I have a lot to build on going into next year," Caspersen said. "I'll be back."

Arriana Benjamin from Marian won the event with her best throw of 14.22m/46-8.

The athletes battled tough weather conditions and time delays as rain and lightning were in the area both Wednesday and Thursday.

"I am very proud of the progress Claire made this year under difficult circumstances," CSM Assistant Coach Kaylee Blake said. "I know she is going to come back with a chip on her shoulder to build on an already incredible start to her collegiate career.

"I can't wait to see what's in store for her next year."
