Flames’ season ends with loss to Concordia
SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. – College of Saint Mary's tennis season came to an end on Friday with a 4-0 loss Concordia University in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals at First Serve Tennis Center.
"It was a tough loss today to a good Concordia team,'' CSM Coach Mike Johnson said.
The third-seeded Bulldogs picked up the doubles point over sixth-seeded CSM with a pair of wins. At No. 2, Chakira Derman and Alana Lopez Pagan of Concordia beat Miranda Swanson and Carolyna Truong, 6-2. At No. 3, Tessa Blough and Alexa Richert of Concordia defeated Maribel Baltazar and Darece Van Auken, 6-0.
"We were up quick at 2 doubles before Concordia battled back,'' Johnson said. "Maribel was cleared for doubles today after being injured.''
Yana Gupta and Iyaanah Pardiwalla were tied 3-3 with Mariana Molano and Ishane Derman when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles, Derman beat Swanson 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4, and Richert downed Van Auken 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Blough won by forfeit at No. 6.
Three singles matches weren't completed. At No. 1, Molano was leading Pardiwalla 6-4, 1-2. At No. 2, Derman was leading Gupta 6-0, 4-2. And at No. 3, Truong was leading Lopez Pagan 5-4.
"Iyaanah and Carolyna were playing close matches, with Yana showing signs of life,'' Johnson said. "All were battling in the second sets when Concordia secured its fourth point and we had to walk off.''
Johnson said the future of Flames tennis is bright.
"It was a tough season with injuries,'' he said. "We're looking forward to getting Rishita Agarwal on the team next season, as well as a couple new recruits! Go Flames.''
