Concordia tennis team handles CSM

OMAHA, Neb. – Concordia University beat College of Saint Mary to the punch Wednesday in their Great Plains Athletic Conference tennis dual and walked away with a 7-0 victory at the CSM courts.

Concordia improved to 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC, while CSM dropped to 2-2 and 0-1.

"The doubles positions today were very competitive,'' CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "We were ahead a break in both matches late in the set and dropped them both. Hats off to the Concordia team, which came in and really had a stronger fight than we had today.''

At No. 1 doubles, Mariana Molano and Ishane Derman of Concordia edged Iyaanah Pardiwalla and Yana Gupta 7-6 (7-5), and at No. 2 doubles, Tessa Blough and Alexa Richert nipped Miranda Swanson and Carolyna Truong 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Molano beat Pardiwalla 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2, Chakira Derman downed Yana Gupta 6-2, 6-0. At No. 3, Ishane Derman defeated Truong 6-4, 6-0. At No. 4, Alana Lopez Pagan handled Swanson 6-1, 6-4. And at No. 5, Richert beat Darece Van Auken 6-0, 6-1. CSM forfeited No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

"We certainly are left with some things to work on, so that's just what we will do,'' Johnson said.

The Flames' match at Northwestern College on Saturday has been postponed to a later date, so CSM will return to action Sunday in Yankton, S.D., for a GPAC match at Mount Marty University.

"We'll practice Friday and then head up to Mount Marty on Sunday to see if we can put it all together,'' Johnson said.
