Flames win three third-set tiebreakers to edge Nazareth

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Saint Mary tennis team finished its spring break trip in dramatic fashion on Friday, outdueling Nazareth (N.Y.) University 4-3 at Hilton Head High School.

The victory moved the Flames to 2-1 on the season.

"It was tough, with close matches all around!'' CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "We won three of the four third-set tiebreakers to pull out the win. It was great experience to get these extra matches this week!''

Due to injury, the Flames again were forced to default No. 3 doubles, but they won No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the important point. At No. 1, Iyaanah Pardiwalla and Yana Gupta beat Catherine Zak and Kenna Ellis 7-5, and at No. 2 Carolyna Truong and Miranda Swanson beat Sarah Stone and Ali Klee, 6-3.

That meant CSM needed to win three of the five contested singles matches, and Pardiwalla, Gupta and Truong all came through in third-set super tiebreaks to get the job done. At No. 1, Pardiwalla beat Zak 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6). At No. 2, Gupta defeated Ellis 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3). And at No. 3 Truong fought past Stone 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4).

The other two matches also were evenly contested. At No. 4, Victoria Cioni of Nazareth edged Swanson 7-5, 7-5, and at No. 5, Klee got past Darece Van Auken 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).

The Flames will return home and open Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. home match at Genesis Westroads against Concordia University.
