Flames drop heart-breaker to miss out on GPAC Tournament
OMAHA, Neb. -- The College of Saint Mary tennis team wrapped up the regular season on Monday afternoon with a 5-2 GPAC loss to Mount Marty University.
The loss sees the Flames wrap up the season at 7-10 overall and 1-6 in GPAC play. Mount Marty improves their overall record to 6-6 while upping their GPAC mark to 3-4.
Renee Acena and Blake McDowall earned straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Incidentally, the scores of both matches were 6-2, 6-0.
"Blake and Renee rolled through and got the team two quick points while Darece and Carolyna fell just short," said coach Mike Johnson.
Iyannah Pardiwalla took the first set at No. 2 singles before falling 7-6 (7-3) and 6-3.
Carolyna Truong and Darece Van Auken fell by identical 6-1, 6-3 scores at No. 3 and No. 6 while Miranda Swanson lost a nail-biter at No. 4 singles, dropping the first set 7-5, rebounding to win the second 6-2, and falling 7-5 in the third.
Johnson added, "the match was a nail biter with the last two points going down to the third sets. Miranda was quickly up 4-1, but couldn't close the match. Iyannah played a great first set, lost in the tiebreaker in the second, and got behind in the third. She battled back but it slipped away."
CSM took the win at No. 1 doubles for the Flames but Mount Marty took the point by winning at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
"Losing the doubles point got the team off to a rough start, but we knew we could fight and try to come up with four singles wins," rued coach Johnson.
Acena and Pardiwalla picked up the Flames' doubles win, doing so by a 6-4 margin.
Truong and Swanson lost 6-3 at No. 2 and the pairing of McDowall and Van Auken fell 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Coach Johnson summed up the day by saying, "It was a close match, Senior Day was fun, but it's a tough loss for the team."
Following the match, CSM honored their two seniors, Acena and McDowall.
Johnson went on to add, "special shout out to Renee and Blake, our seniors. You are always welcome to a team practice and you'll always be part of the team.
"All in all, we had a great season; we improved and we had fun. We look forward to next season," reflected coach Johnson.
