CSM dropped by Concordia, 5-2
SEWARD, Neb. -- College of Saint Mary picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles but fell to Concordia University 5-2 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference tennis match on Monday.
The Flames fall to 7-9 on the year and 1-5 in GPAC play while CUNE improves to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Renee Acena and Miranda Swanson picked up the CSM singles wins. Acena took the first set 6-2 and fell 6-7 in the second before dominating Mariana Molano in the tie-breaker, 10-1. Swanson split the first two sets with Tessa Blough, winning 6-2 and losing 4-6 before prevailing 10-5 in the tiebreak third.
Chakira Derman took a straight-set victory over Iyannah Pardiwalla 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Alana Lopez Pagan likewise dispatched of Carolyna Truong 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
In No. 5 singles, Brooke Hosick bettered Blake McDowall 6-2, 6-0 and Kylie Freudenburg defeated Darece Van Auken 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
Concordia swept the doubles matches to earn the points. Molano and Lopez Pagan edged Acena and Pardiwalla 6-4 at No. 1; Blough and Derman topped Swanson and Truong 6-2 at No. 2; Gottberg and Richert downed Van Auken and McDowall 6-3 at No. 3.
The Flames wrap up regular-season play on Monday, Apr. 22 when they host Mount Marty University at 1 p.m. in a match likely to have major implications on the GPAC Tournament.
