Mustangs sweep Flames in GPAC tennis action

OMAHA, Neb. -- The College of Saint Mary tennis team suffered a 7-0 sweep at the hands of Morningside University on Monday afternoon in Great Plains Athletic Conference tennis action.

Morningside improves to 13-3 on the year, upping their GPAC record to 4-0. The Flames slide a game below .500 at 6-7 while seeing their mark in GPAC play dip to 0-3.

"That was a tough match against what looks like the best team in the league today. CSM lost every position to a stacked Morningside team this season," said coach Mike Johnson.

Renee Acena dropped her first singles match of the spring, falling 6-4, 6-1 to Line Jensen. "Renee played a tough first set as both players had trouble holding serve. In the second set, Jensen gained more confidence holding serve and ended up winning the set."

Iyannah Pardiwalla took the first set 6-4, CSM's lone set victory of the day, before falling to Jil Hellerforth 6-1, 6-1 in the final two sets. "Iyannah Pardiwalla played a tough second set against the Morningside No. 2 but her opponent quickly took control in the third set.

"In every other position, we were just outplayed. Nothing to be embarrassed about just a really sound loss to a really good team," said coach Johnson.

Carolyna Truong lost at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2; Miranda Swanson fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4; Darece Van Auken dropped her match 6-0, 6-1 in No. 5; Blake McDowall took a 6-1, 6-0 defeat at No. 6 singles.

In doubles action, Acena and Pardiwalla played the closest match, falling 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Truong and Swanson fell 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, and the duo of Van Auken and McDowall lost 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The Flames are back in action Wednesday, Apr. 10 when they host Northwestern College at 4 p.m.
