Flames edged by Hastings in nail-biter
HASTINGS, Neb. -- After splitting six singles, matches Hastings College won two of three doubles events to take a 4-3 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory over the College of Saint Mary tennis team.
Hastings ups their overall record to 8-9, picking up their first GPAC win to move to 1-2 in league play while CSM falls to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in GPAC play.
"With the exception of the matches we won handily, every other match was super close and we just seemed to lose focus overall," said coach Mike Johnson. "We need to get better at playing the big points. We need to focus and we have to bring more fire to our flame."
Renee Acena defeated Sasha Richards 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The Flames also received singles wins from Darece Van Auken (6-0, 6-1) over Amanda Skinner at No. 5 singles and Blake McDowall (3-6, 6-0, 10-6) over Abby Harveson at No. 6 singles.
The Broncos received wins from Josline Carter (6-7, 6-1, 6-3) over Iyannah Pardiwalla at No. 2 singles, Victoria Harris (1-6, 6-2, 6-1) over Carolyna Truong at No. 3 singles, and Paige Wilcoxon (6-3, 7-6) over Miranda Swanson at No. 4 singles.
Acena and Pardiwalla took CSM's doubles victory at No. 1 by a 6-3 margin over Carter and Harris.
Richards and Wilcoxon defeated Truong and Swanson at No. 2 doubles while Harveson and Skinner slipped past Van Auken and McDowall 7-5 at No. 3 doubles to secure the match for Hastings.
Making the loss especially bitter was the fact that CSM led 3-0 in No. 2 doubles and had match point at 5-3 in No. 3 doubles before Hastings rallied in both.
"We play a very tough Morningside team tomorrow and Northwestern on Wednesday," added coach Johnson. That Morningside match has first serve scheduled for 3 p.m.
