Flames tennis downs Golden Flyers, 6-1

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The College of Saint Mary tennis team defeated Nazareth University 6-1 on Wednesday in their first match at the historic Van Der Meer Tennis Center this week.

The victory moves CSM to 5-4 on the season while the Golden Flyers fall to 5-7.

Renee Acena set the tone for the Flames at No. 1 singles, taking a straight-set victory over Catherine Zak (6-1, 6-1), as CSM collected wins in five of six singles matches.

Iyannah Pardiwalla toppled Kenna Ellis in No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-3), while Carolyna Truong swept Ali Klee (6-2, 6-2), and Miranda Swanson cruised past Aly Agnello (6-0, 6-1) in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

Nazareth's Victoria Cioni picked up the lone singles win for the Golden Flyers, dispatching Blake McDowall 6-2, 6-1 in No. 5 singles.

Darece Van Auken won the most competitive singles match of the day, out-lasting Paige Masrouri 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 in the No. 6 slot.

CSM won two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. The team of Acena and Pardiwalla (CSM) defeated Zak and Ellis (NU) at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, while the duo of Swanson and Truong (CSM) took a 6-0 win in No. 2 doubles over Klee and Sarah Stone (NU). McDowall and Van Auken fell 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to Erica Muscato and Cioni (NU).

The Flames are back in action tomorrow when they take on Western New England University at 10 a.m. before wrapping up their trip on Thursday against George Fox University at 9:30 a.m.
