CSM tennis drops nailbiter to Kansas Wesleyan

OMAHA, Neb. – It was about as close as it could get.

The College of Saint Mary tennis team lost a 4-3 nailbiter to Kansas Wesleyan University Saturday night. The Flames dropped two of three third set tiebreakers in the nonconference contest.

CSM opened play by winning the doubles point as Renee Acena and Iyannah Pardiwalla got a 6-3 victory at No. 1 and Darece Van Auken and Blake McDowall won 6-3 at No. 3. Miranda Swanson and Carolyna Truong lost 6-2 at No. 2.

But the Flames were only able to get two more points in singles. Acena posted a 6-2,6-0 victory at No. 1 and Van Auken won 6-4, 6-6 (5-7), 12-10 at No. 5.

Pardiwalla lost 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 10-6 at No. 2; Truong fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3; Swanson was beat 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 10-1 at No. 4 and Pamela Martinez lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6.

"Renee cruised through her match and Darece won a nailbiter third set breaker 12-10," CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "Miranda and Iyannah came back from a set down to win the second sets before losing close third set tiebreakers."

The Flames are now 4-4 on the season and return to play March 17 with a 3 p.m. home contest vs. Doane University.

"The team is getting stronger," Johnson said. "We are working on trusting our swing path and trying not to play too tight when the match gets tough. We are gearing up to play Doane this coming week before we leave the Midwest to play opponents in Hilton Head (S.C.)."
