CSM tennis cruises to 6-1 victory
OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary tennis team cruised to victory Saturday night over the University of Minnesota-Morris. The Flames won the nonconference contest 6-1 at Genesis Health Club-Westroads.
"We had a great showing tonight against Minnesota-Morris," CSM Coach Mike Johnson said.
The Flames started the match by winning the doubles point in sweeping fashion.
Renee Acena and Iyannah Pardiwalla won 6-4 at No. 1, Carolyna Truong and Miranda Swanson posted a 6-3 win at No. 2 and Darece Van Auken and Blake McDowall notched a 6-3 victory at No. 3.
"The team swept the doubles positions in fairly close matches and then went on to play some fantastic singles," Johnson said.
The Flames won five of the six singles matches to secure the win.
Acena won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; Pardiwalla battled to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory at No. 2; Truong won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3; Swanson posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 and Van Auken won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6. McDowall had to withdraw at No. 5 due to injury.
"Renee cruised in her match without dropping a game," Johnson said. "Lyna played a great match and was striking the ball clean. Miranda played a smart match and has really shown improvement in her ability striking the ball. Blake toughed out her match – she lost the first set 3-6 and the battled to 4-4 before having to retire her match with a foot injury.
"It's hard to pick a star of the night because everyone deserves a shout out, but Iyannah won both of her two positions tonight in her first showing as a Flame. She battled tonight and played smart. Darece is also a star with the best-looking ground strokes I have ever seen her hit. Between her serve and her lefty forehand, she was an on-court machine tonight."
The Flames are now 4-2 on the season and return to action Monday with a match against Midland University. The contest will start at 1 p.m. at Genesis Health Club-Westroads.
