Acena leads College of Saint Mary tennis to close win

RED OAK, Iowa – Renee Acena pulled out a gritty tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles to clinch the match for College of Saint Mary.

The Flames defeated Iowa Central Community College 4-3 Monday night in the nonconference matchup held in Red Oak, Iowa.

Acena and teammate Carolyna Truong secured the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles along with a forfeit win at No. 3 doubles. Miranda Swanson and Blake McDowall lost 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

In singles play, Truong lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2; Swanson was defeated 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Darece Van Auken fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. McDowall picked up a forfeit win at No. 5 singles, while Pamela Martinez won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.

That left the match in the hands of the two players at No. 1 singles.

Acena beat her opponent 7-3, 3-6 (10-8) to secure the win for CSM.

"Renee pulled out an amazing third-set tiebreaker win 10-8 after being down," CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "She showed some real grit and carried the team to a win.

"It was tough losses for Miranda, Lyna and Darece in singles, but they played very tough opponents and did adapt on court and showed the ability to make changes mid-match. They were outgunned, but did a great job."

The Flames return to action Saturday with a 6 p.m. home contest vs. University of Minnesota Morris at Genesis Health Club – Westroads.

"We look forward to getting back to competition and we are excited for the upcoming matches," Johnson said.
