Flames wrap up competition at KCAC Championships

ELKHART, Ind. – The College of Saint Mary swim team wrapped a successful trip to the KCAC Championships Saturday.

The Flames finished fifth place in team competition with 321 points.

Olivet Nazarene won the meet with 785 points. In other team scores: Bethel 648, University of Saint Mary 402, Aquinas 385, Midland University 301, University of Jamestown 298, Morningside University 178 and Sterling College 92.

"We set ourselves up really well this morning and then had a fantastic meet tonight," CSM Interim Head Coach Eric Rees said. "It was a great weekend. I am so happy for our swimmers – they were incredible this weekend."

Lily Wright had CSM's top individual finish with a second-place swim in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.91 – which broke a school record. Teammate Abby Hoss also qualified for the finals in the event and finished 13th in 2:46.19.

All three CSM swimmers qualified for the finals in the 200 butterfly. Hannah Ryan was 10th in 2:26.26, Juliet Balman placed 13th in 2:45.45 and Addison Miller took 14th in 2:47.04.

Both Jaidyn Vanschoiack and Hannah Steinmetz advanced to the finals in the 200 backstroke. Vanschoiack took 15th in 2:21.44 and Steinmetz was 16th in 2:21.64.

In the 1,650 freestyle, Miller was 16th in 20:14.18 and Steinmetz finished took 18th in 20:27.65.

The Flames had seven swimmers in the 100 freestyle. Kylee Brown placed fifth in the finals in 54.03, Maeve Janssen was eighth in 54.66 and Mia Gauvin took 12th in 55.27. In the prelims, Naomi Huttenga was 27th in 1:01.07, Olivia Poole took 29th in 1:02.04, Skylar Ned placed 34th in 1:05.00 and Autumn Neale finished 37th in 1:09.77.

In the 400 freestyle relay, the foursome of Gauvin, Janssen, Wright and Brown stopped the clock in 3:40.95 and placed fifth.
