CSM swimmers lose close dual with Midland
FREMONT, Neb. – After a long break from competition, the College of Saint Mary swim team got back into racing form Friday.
The Flames traveled to Midland University for a dual meet with the Warriors. Midland defeated CSM 127-119.
College of Saint Mary won seven of the 14 events including four of the first five races.
"We swam really well with a lot of fast swims," CSM Interim Head Coach Erik Rees said. "I thought we swam well considering how long it had been since we competed last. We had quite a few season-best times."
The Flames opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. The foursome of Mia Gauvin, Lily Wright, Naomi Huttenga and Maeve Janssen touched the wall in 1:54.84 to edge out Midland's top relay time of 1:54.91.
In the 200 freestyle, CSM swept the top three spots as Kylee Brown won the event in 1:59.01, Hannah Steinmetz was second in 2:10.22 and Addison Miller took third in 2:12.97.
Gauvin won the next event with a time of 29.81 in the 50 backstroke. Teammate Jaidyn Vanschoiack took second in 30.91 and Steinmetz was fifth in 32.23.
In the 50 breaststroke, Wright cruised to an easy win in 30.83. Teammate Skylar Ned took fourth in 44.43.
Hannah Ryan led the Flames in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:07.29 for third place. Huttenga was fourth in 1:12.47 and Juliet Balman placed fifth in 1:13.10.
College of Saint Mary had six swimmers compete in the 50 freestyle – three towards team competition and three as exhibition. Janssen paced the Flames with a second-place swim in 25.34, Brown took third in 25.73 and Wright was fifth in 26.45. Swimming as exhibition, Olivia Poole posted a time of 29.27, Ned stopped the clock in 29.57 and Autumn Neale finished in 31.28.
Brown followed up that race by winning the 100 freestyle. Her time of 56.01 helped earn the team nine points for the blue-ribbon finish. Janssen took second in 57.99 and Balman placed fourth in 1:02.13. Swimming as exhibition, Ryan finished in 1:04.18, Poole posted a time of 1:04.45, Ned swam a 1:07.90 and Neale touched the wall in 1:11.75.
Gauvin took second place in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.45, while Vanschoiack took fourth in 1:05.80 and Steinmetz was fifth in 1:06.38.
Wright won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.88 and Huttenga placed third in 1:22.67.
Miller was CSM's only swimmer in the 500 freestyle and she won the event in 5:56.83.
In the 50 butterfly, Ryan had CSM's best finish with a fourth-place swim in 30.57. Huttenga was fifth in 31.20 and Vanschoiack was sixth in 32.49. Swimming as exhibition, Miller posted a time of 33.07 and Neale raced to a time of 36.11.
In the next race, Balman took third in the 200 individual medley in 2:38.26.
In the final race, the relay team of Janssen, Vanschoiack, Balman and Brown took second place in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.63 and the foursome of Miller, Ned, Steinmetz and Ryan was fourth in 1:54.23.
College of Saint Mary swims again Feb. 8-10 in the KCAC Championships.
"I think we have set ourselves up for a nice conference meet," Rees said.
