A team victory! Flames win Spire Relays

LANSING, Kan. – What a team win!

The College of Saint Mary swim team won the Spire Relays Saturday. The event hosted by the University of Saint Mary was held at Lansing High School.

The Flames scored 132 team points for the victory. University of Saint Mary took second with 128, Nebraska Wesleyan University placed third with 102 and Simpson College finished fourth with 54.

"Today we showed how team oriented we are," CSM Coach Mykenzie Liston said. "The ladies are swimming for one another.  They pushed each other on every single race. Every race was not perfect, but we are continuing to work on certain things and it showed today.

"We had fun and pulled together the last three events to win as a team."

The Spire Relays are run where every single event is in relay form and there are some unique, non-traditional events. The Flames won five events.

CSM won the 3x100 backstroke relay with Hannah Steinmetz, Jaidyn Vanschoiack and Mia Gauvin in 3:12.81; the 3x100 breaststroke relay with Lily Wright, Abby Hoss and Kylee Brown in 3:34.87; the 400 medley relay with Gauvin, Brown, Wright and Maeve Janssen in 4:19.42; the 4x00 IM relay with Gauvin, Juliet Balman, Hannah Ryan and Wright in 4:27.93; the 400 freestyle relay with Brown, Janssen, Gauvin and Steinmetz in 3:49.28.

Four times the Flames came in second: the 800 freestyle relay team of Janssen, Addie Miller, Balman, Ryan in 9:04.19; the 500 crescendo relay of Brown, Steinmetz, Hoss and Miller in 5:13.76; the 3x500 freestyle with Hoss, Steinmetz and Miller in 17:51.74; the 100 medley relay with Wright, Gauvin, Brown and Skylar Ned in 58.01.

CSM's only third-place finish was the 400 freestyle relay team of Miller, Hoss, Wright and Vanschoiack in 4:01.88.

The Flames added two fourth-place finishes, three fifth-place touches and two sixth-place finishes.

College of Saint Mary returns to competition on Oct. 21 at a triangular at Morningside University. Midland University will be the third team at the meet.
