CSM swimmers defeat Jamestown in season opener

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary swim team opened the 2023-2024 season by winning 10 of 14 events in a dual meet with the University of Jamestown.

The Flames won the meet 148-87.

"We raced really well," CSM Coach Mykenzie Liston said. "We have a young team and we have a long ways to go, but we saw really good things.

"Overall, I'm proud of the girls for racing for one another and the energy that we had on the pool deck."

Perhaps CSM's only hiccup came in the first event of the day when the Flames 'A' relay disqualified in the 200-yard medley relay. CSM's 'B' relay of Jaidyn Vanschoiack, Abby Hoss, Naomi Huttenga and Juliet Balman took second in a time of 2:06.29.

In the 1,000 freestyle, CSM's Addie Miller won the event in 12:21.02.

The Flames had three swimmers in the 200 freestyle. Mia Guavin won the race in 2:06.61, Hannah Steinmetz placed third in 2:12.79 and Skylar Ned was fourth in 2:26.15.

In the 100 backstroke, Lily Wright won the race in 1:03.20, while Vanschoiack was third in 1:07.22 and Balman finished fourth in 1:11.88. Kylee Brown followed by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.11, while Hoss placed third in 1:18.57.

Hannah Ryan was CSM's lone swimmer in the 200 butterfly and she won the race in 2:36.12.

The Flames had five swimmers in the 50 freestyle. Maeve Janssen won the race in 26.44, Huttenga took third in 29.54 and Olivia Poole was fourth in 30.45. Ned and Autumn Neale swam the event as exhibition and finished in 30.80 and 32.17, respectively.

In the 100 freestyle, Gauvin won the race in 57.73, while Janssen was second in 1:00.77 and Poole was fourth in 1:07.24. Neale swam exhibition and finished in 1:16.13.

Steinmetz took second in the 200 backstroke in 2:23.13 and Vanschoiack placed third in 2:28.27. The 200 breaststroke followed and Wright easily won that in 2:30.81, while Hoss took second in 2:50.22.

In the 500 freestyle, Brown won the race in 5:32.05, while Miller placed second in 6:00.57. Huttenga was CSM's lone entry in the 100 butterfly and she took second in 1:13.66.

In the 200 individual medley, CSM's Ryan placed second in 2:36.63 and Balman finished third in 2:48.13.

The Flames took three of the top four spots in the 200 freestyle relay. Janssen, Wright, Gauvin and Brown combined to win the event in 1:44.86. The 'B' relay of Vanschoiack, Ryan, Miller and Steinmetz took third in 1:50.74 and then Balman, Poole, Ned and Huttenga placed third in 1:58.58.

CSM returns to competition Oct. 7 with a triangular at William Jewell College (including Truman State).
