Concordia breaks through late, ends Flames’ season

SEWARD, Neb. – A strong defensive first half had seventh-seeded College of Saint Mary eyeing a quarterfinal soccer upset Saturday night in the GPAC Postseason Tournament against Concordia University.

However, the second-seeded Bulldogs broke through with three goals in the final 31 minutes for a 3-0 victory, ending CSM's season at 6-9-4.

"I am proud of the ladies and their fight all season,'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "We didn't allow a shot in the first half, but we didn't capitalize on the chances that we created. We had to push up late in the game and it left us open.''

Concordia (12-5-1) advances to Thursday's 7 p.m. semifinal at home against third-seeded Dordt (12-4-1), which eliminated Doane 3-0 on Saturday. Top-seeded Hastings (13-1-5) will host fourth-seeded Morningside (8-5-4) in Thursday's other 7 p.m. semifinal. Hastings beat Midland 4-0 and Morningside blanked Briar Cliff 2-0 in other quarterfinal action on Saturday.

At Concordia, the home team opened the scoring in the 59th minute on a goal by Mirarosa Gyllenswan, assisted by Kierstynn Garner. The Bulldogs made it 2-0 in the 70th minute on a Savannah Andrews goal, assisted by Kierstynn Garner. Garner added the final goal in the 84th minute, unassisted.

CSM actually outshot Concordia 9-6, while the Bulldogs helds a slim 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Marissa Ring led the Flames with three shots, two of which were on goal. Kylie Anderson added two shots, while Jessica Slater, Abbie Anderson, Kaitlin Smith and Abby Ridout added one apiece.

"It was a game of missed chances and a tale of two halves,'' Parkhill said.

Parkhill said he was proud of the way his 14 seniors led the program in his first season at the helm.

"This team has left the program in a better place, and we will be someone to watch out for in the years to come,'' he said.
