Flames battle to stalemate with Briar Cliff
OMAHA, Neb. – Playing in front of a good-sized crowd at a great complex, the College of Saint Mary soccer team battled to the final minute in a 0-0 tie with Briar Cliff University Wednesday night.
The Flames played the Chargers at UNO's Caniglia Field and also recognized it as a Pink Out event. Neither team was able to get the win, but both left the field with a point.
"What an environment," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "It was amazing to play at UNO's Caniglia Field and to have all the CSM support from other athletes and fans. It was a fun day to be part of the Flames family."
CSM goalkeeper Alivia Schade agreed. She posted the shutout with 10 saves for the Flames.
"It was a very high energy environment and the support that we had in the stands was unmatched," Schade said. "I thought we did very well with our man-marking and communication throughout the whole game. Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome and I thought we all played for each other."
Briar Cliff outshot CSM 15-6 in the contest but Schade made some clutch saves to post the clean sheet. The Flames had several chances to score including hitting a post and then the cross bar, but couldn't get one past Charger goalie Jaime Rowlands.
"I'm really proud of what we put on the field today," Irsik said. "We're very thin at some positions and that is causing us to make adjustments defensively that we have to work though. To put up a shutout against a team like Briar Cliff in that situation just shows how much our ladies want to reach their goals. I know we're only going to keep improving."
CSM is now 4-1-2 in the GPAC and 6-1-4 overall. Briar Cliff is 3-2-2, 4-3-3. The Flames return to action Saturday with an 8:45 a.m. contest vs. Harris-Stowe at Avila University.
